Drum Corps Performance Roles: Brass, Percussion, Color Guard, and Dance

Explore the main performance areas, understand what to practice first, and use each corps’ official audition packet to guide your next steps.

03 FIND YOUR LANE

Start with your
performance role.

Choose a lane to focus your first reps. The current corps packet takes priority over general advice.

01 / BRASS

Sound & control

Build a warm-up, tone, air, articulation, flexibility, and consistent time. Record short excerpts and listen back.

02 / PERCUSSION

Time & technique

Practice relaxed setup, strokes, timing, and the exact exercises and equipment in the packet.

03 / COLOR GUARD

Movement & expression

Work on posture, movement vocabulary, choreography, and equipment with safe space and instruction.

04 / DANCE & MOVEMENT

Alignment & clarity

Practice balance, coordination, movement quality, and combinations in short sections before adding speed.

Choose a role with information, not guesswork

Start with the role you are most motivated to practice, then compare the actual requirements. Corps may offer different sections, equipment, choreography, and audition materials. Requirements can also change from year to year.

  • Brass: Ask which instrument and materials to prepare. Work on a steady tone, air, articulation, flexibility, time, and the assigned music.
  • Percussion: Confirm instrument, sticks or mallets, exercises, setup, and any required equipment. Practice timing, sound quality, control, and relaxed movement.
  • Color guard: Review the requested movement vocabulary, choreography, and equipment. Train in a safe space and ask what equipment is provided or required.
  • Dance and movement: Clarify the expected combinations and video angles. Develop alignment, balance, coordination, clarity, and consistent timing.

Make an audition-ready practice folder

Keep the official packet, downloaded music or exercises, staff notes, practice recordings, dates, and questions together. Label files clearly and keep a copy of important requirements. If you are considering more than one corps or role, keep each set of materials separate so you do not accidentally prepare the wrong assignment.

When you are unsure whether a skill or item is required, ask the corps directly. General videos can demonstrate possibilities, but the current packet and staff instructions determine what you should submit or bring.
